Series: Dans le Noir

It had been a hard Saturday. Sunday was worse. There were a lot of issues unresolved, a lot. My body and mind were tired, exhausted, drained from all the conflict, the type of conflict between two people that can never be resolved. I dragged myself through the streets and down, into the very depths of the earth, the bowels of the city, the subway. The alleys were closing in on me, encroaching, pushing, shoving. Everything was getting darker, blurred, obscured and I began to panic. I needed to escape and no escape was near, just the sensation of falling, falling further into an abyss, a world of no hope, of despair of impending doom, of darkness.....

One small step at a time, a journey, into uncertainty, questioning, doubting, never knowing what possible outcome awaits me at the other end. Where will it lead to, this tunnel of darkness and despair, yet with it's mesmerising allure, it's glimmer of hope, it's promise of salvation, of ecstacy and elation, a chance to traverse the threshold of joy, to caress the enchanting face of glory. Well, I have to say, that now I know...

The video has huge relevance, believe me!

I have to say, even at this stage, I really manage to surprise myself. I remember crying, uncontrollably, like I had done when we went to see the Wizard of Oz. I was three years old, and somehow, something inside of me triggered, maybe a vision of things to come. I couldn't stop crying. We were in eachother's arms, but we knew, we both knew, all that was, was, and what was, would never be again. Two bottles of Shiraz, of all things Shiraz, and here I was, again, beyond, beyond the redline. Idiot. How I got home, I'll never know, a really stupid thing to do, I can be glad there were no cops, no roadblocks, I would have been toast. The room was spinning, I was pleading, begging, praying, I'll never, never do it again, never again. It all seemed like a dream, a really bad dream but the next morning through the cobwebs of my mind, I looked, looked at the screen on the camera and no, it was no dream. The thing is, I was, I was crying but I wasn't crying for her, I have to say that through the blur of it all, I really know why, and what and for whom....ya, slip, slidin, away !

The event to which I refer took place in Long Street, right there in a restaurant above street level. It's kind of like a Bourbon street, bars, restaurants, jazz clubs, also some quite seedy establishments. I found the image on my camera the next morning, the time it was taken, about 4am, I guess as we left. I remember the camera dangling around my neck, I don't actually recall taking the image. Who are these people, I don't know. People of the night, drug dealers, watchers, waiiters, opportunists, I don't know, but this image and this place will always evoke these memories in me...

Table Mountain rises spectacularly out of the Atlantic Ocean with the city of Cape Town beneath it and the Cape Peninsular laying beyond it, as seen from the azure waters of Table Bay.
